SPORTING COLUMBUS HIRES WILLY MERRICK

Sporting Columbus hired Willy Merrick as its new High School Director of Coaching.  He replaces Steven McCarthy (boys) and Aimee Haywood (girls) who both moved on to new college assignments.  Willy, the current Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Ohio Dominican University, will be responsible for all high school aged teams within the Sporting Columbus program.  “I am excited to bring the girls’ program another experienced college coach who will continue building our brand, style of play and evolve the program” states Dave Merrick, Director – Girls’ Programming.  Willy has been the Men’s Head Coach at Ohio Dominican University since 2008.  Geoff Starks, Director - Boys’ Programming adds “As our program continues to grow, we are truly fortunate to have Willy continue with Sporting Columbus in a Director’s role.  Not only will we all benefit from his coaching experience on the collegiate level, but also his many years of experience in youth soccer.”

Prior to joining Ohio Dominican’s staff, Merrick spent five years as the head varsity soccer coach at Thomas Worthington High School.  During that time, he led the team to the 2001 State Championship.  Merrick spent seven years playing professional soccer with stints with the Buffalo Blizzards, Columbus XOGGZ, Cincinnati Silverbacks, Lexington Bandits and the Indiana Blast of the United States Independent Soccer League (USISL).  “I look forward to working with Geoff, Dave and the Sporting Columbus players, coaches and parents and continuing the development of high school aged players.”
